A.M. Best Debunks Five Myths About Disability Insurance

A discussion of disability insurance and how to find out whether you already have it or need to buy it is available at A.M. Best Co.'s Consumer Insurance Center in a new multimedia feature.
This latest feature in the ongoing consumer-oriented series addresses why consumers don't think they need disability insurance, including not realizing that one in three workers over 30 will suffer a disability that keeps them from working for three months. Fast track for disability benefits

SSA recently initiated Compassionate Allowances, a fast-track benefit-approval program for people with certain medical conditions. Initially, 25 rare diseases and 25 forms of cancer are on the list, and more conditions will be added later. For individuals who meet one of the Compassionate Allowances criteria, disability determination could change from years to as short as a week, SSA officials say. (...)

Notes from rehab

No, not that kind of rehab. On October 4 I had a stroke. The next day my wife and I called 911 and asked them to take us by ambulance to Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut. Ever since United Hospital in Port Chester, NY, closed, that is considered our community hospital.
I stayed four days, getting good care and lots of attention. After four days in Greenwich Hospital I was moved to Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, NY, which is close to Rye, where we live.

New UAB lab helps spinal cord patients cope

Brain Training for Spinal Cord Injury

Scientists at the University of Washington in Seattle report success in their first attempts to harness the brain to treat paralysis in people with spinal cord injuries.
Their technique isn't ready for patients yet, but researcher Chet Moritz, PhD, says it may one day be used to help paralyzed people walk.
"We haven't studied that directly, so it's all speculation on my part, but certainly it's possible in the next 10-20 years," Moritz said at a news conference. (...)

Renovations allow teenager to enter bigger, brighter world

Ben Thorne recently went downstairs to his family's rec room for the first time in six years. What the 15-year-old discovered was like a dream.
Ben, who is confined to a wheelchair with cerebral palsy, had become too heavy for his parents and sister to manage. Carrying him down the stairs at their northeast Calgary home was an impossibility. Ben's world was limited to his bedroom and the other hallways of the family's older bungalow, with its small kitchen and living room.
